#ReitzFootballFriday Week 2 presented by Tracy Zeller Jewelry

After crossing the Ohio River last Friday night and winning their season opener over Henderson County, 34-13, the Mighty Panthers will once again venture back into the Bluegrass State for Week 2.

Reitz will meet perennial Kentucky powerhouse Paducah Tilghman. The Blue Tornado (0-1) fell to McCracken County (Ky.) last Friday, 49-21, and are 0-2 all-time against the Panthers, so the Kentuckians are definitely looking to pick up their first win of the year and the series.

Tilghman stats
Obviously, one game is not sufficient to gauge who a team’s stars will be, but for what it’s worth, here’s who to look out for with the Blue Tornado.

Keep your eyes on their quarterback, #12 Jessie Dunigan. He completed 6-of-17 passes, but threw for one touchdown and picked up another one by rushing, where he totaled 71 yards.

Another player to look out for is #25 Djuan Sherrill, who picked up 81 rushing yards and led the defense with four tackles.

1960 is No. 7 Most Offensive Team in Reitz Football history

Editor’s note: 2014 knocked 1960 down to No. 8 on the all-time list

1960 champs 1Coming in at No. 7 on “The Top 10 Most Offensive Teams in Reitz Football History” are the 1960 Panthers. That season’s undisputed No. 1 team, they finished 9-0, outscoring their opponents, 333-15, and averaged 37 points per game.

They finished ranked at the top of the AP & UPI polls and Litkenhous Grid Ratings. In addition to their mythical state title, they also won the SIAC A Division and city championships.

Included in Coach Whicker’s Legendary Game Series, on Oct. 27 of this year, the top-ranked Panthers defeated then-No. 3 North, 34-0, in what is simply known as “The Game.”

Coach Byers‘ 1960 squad featured several future Reitz Football Hall of Famers (seniors Don Hansen, Ken Hansen, Doug Harp and junior Charles Orth). Joe Goodrid and Royce Neisz also earned all-state honors.

After the season, Byers stated that the 1960 team was the best defensive group he’d ever coached. However, the following season’s team may have changed his mind about that (they’ll be featured in an upcoming edition of the series!).
